Transparency is a highly desirable feature of the recommendations and decisions made by public authorities on the use of chemicals, GMOs and other potentially hazardous products. Without it, the relevant political decisions may not be perceived as legitimate. But it is no simple task to make the complicated technical basis of such decisions transparent to the rest of society. And when decisions involve political considerations it can be hard to clarify the criteria of political acceptability. These difficulties notwithstanding, we believe that we have taken some important steps forward in the project “The Hidden Values - Transparency in Decision-Making Processes Dealing with Hazardous Activities”. The report seeks to shed light on what is needed to create a transparent framework for political and administrative decisions on the use of GMOs and chemical products. It is our hope that the report’s recommendations will serve as a source of guidance to public authorities, politicians and others interested in increasing the transparency of decisions on GMOs, chemicals and other hazardous activities.
