My research project Incongruent images: Connective mourning rituals on Instagram following the 2017 Manchester Arena attack explores images shared across visual social media by grassroots users in response to global terror attacks. Everyday images created by users on platforms such as Instagram following terror attacks highlight the overlap between banal social media habits with affective and explicit themes. The project seeks to analyse these often-contradictory user images, unpacking the diverse and yet nuanced way users engage with emotion on visual social media. The project contributes to knowledge on how citizens and activists satirise and undermine dominant narratives, and methodological approaches for examining violent conflicts on visual social media.

This project concludes in 2020, and is part of the research group Images of Conflict - Conflicting Images (ICCI) led by associate professor Mette Mortensen. The ICCI includes a core group of seven scholars, and examines the “ways in which digital communication technologies fundamentally change the circulation of images from areas of conflict.” (ICCI project overview). The project addresses how the mediated visibility of contemporary conflicts is reconfigured by participants in conflicts producing and distributing images through connective media.
