Urban Violence and Citizenship in São Paulo (working title)

This PhD is a collaboration between the Danish Institute for International Studies (DIIS): and Department of Anthropology, Copenhagen University.

The aim of the PhD project is to contribute to understandings of how urban violence affects citizenship in megacities where insecurity is high and de facto access to citizenship is unequal. This is explored through the lens of security provision in São Paulo, Brazil, where public, private and informal security bodies co-exist.

The project applies an ethnographic case study method to uncover the myriad security responses to urban violence in São Paulo and to explore the agency and experiences of citizens in an urban margin.

This PhD project combines three debates within social science that draw on sociology, anthropology and International Relations: 1) urban studies of megacities, 2) security studies drawing on assemblage theory, and 3) practice-oriented citizenship theory.

I will be conducting fieldwork in São Paulo between August 2015-January 2016 and August 2016-December 2016.

The Project is supervised by: Henrik Vigh, Department of Anthropology, University of Copenhagen and Helene Maria Kyed, Danish Institute for International Studies (DIIS)
