Haja Kadarmideen is a Professor and Group Leader of Animal Breeding, Quantitative Genetics and Systems Biology in the Department of Large Animal Sciences, Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences. He is also the Director of 2 major national/international consortiums: the Danish-Indian BioChild Consortium on childhood obesity and, the Danish-Brazilian GIFT Consortium on cattle reproduction. He serves as a board and steering committee member of various research and innovation initiatives within the University of Copenhagen and nationally. He is on the Editorial board of Frontiers in Genetics, Frontiers in Veterinary Science, Turkish J. of Veterinary & Animal Sciences and EC Veterinary science journals. His main research interests are in:

-Genomic evaluation, selection and breeding programs of cattle, sheep and pigs for improved production, health and welfare, disease resistance, natural resource use and product quality.

 - Systems genetics and systems biology of health, diseases, performance, production and reproduction traits in animals

- Statistical genetics and bioinformatics analyses of both animal and human diseases and quantitative traits

- Genomics and systems genetics/biology of human obesity, diabetes, psychiatric disorders and stem cells

Please visit groups’ website for more information regarding his group’s research focus, publications, projects, teaching etc.

Haja Kadarmideen obtained a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) and Masters' degree (MVSc) in Veterinary Genetics (Chennai, India) in 1989 and 1992, respectively. He obtained his PhD degree in Quantitative Genetics from The University of Guelph (Ontario, Canada) in 1998 after conducting a part of his PhD research at the Wageningen University in the Netherlands. He was a scientist in dairy cattle genetics for over 3 years at the Scottish Agricultural College, Edinburgh, UK. He spent a short time as a visiting scientist at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, USA in 1999. He was then a head of statistical animal genetics group at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) Zurich in Switzerland (2001-2006). For two years at ETH Zurich, he was also a Deputy head or director (Stellvertreter) of the Institute of Animal Sciences. In 2006, he was appointed as a principal research scientist and leader of quantitative genetics and systems biology group at the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) in Australia where he worked until his move to the University of Copenhagen in January 2011. He has closely worked with animal breeding/genomics/biotech industries, international organisations and led many international research projects in Europe, Africa and Asia. He has trained over 25 graduate (MSc and PhD) students, 10 postdocs and mentored many junior and senior scientists/faculty. He has authored/co-authored over 250 scientific publications (journal articles with scientific peer review, refereed book chapters, conference proceedings papers, abstracts etc).
