Bark Ecology

The tree bark constitutes a habitat for a wide range of living organisms including corticolous lichens. However, the corticolous lichen species are not equally distributed among tree species and along the tree stem. The variation in the surface structure and the physical/chemical composition of the bark creates a gradient of habitats along the tree stem and among the tree species. From a whole tree perspective, this study aims to examine the influence of tree species and their physical and chemical bark features on the corticolous lichen distribution. The study is based on records of corticolous lichen species found at different heights along the stems of 159 trees coming from seven different angiosperm tree species all native to Denmark.
