In addition to knowledge, attitudes and practices in connection with dietary habits, smoking habits, physical activity, obesity and hypertension, the local community is described with the aid of demographic data and special characteristics such as the conditions of health insurance, obesity, blood pressure and previous infarction. A representative sample of men aged 22-69 were selected by means of 'multistage sampling' and were thereafter interviewed. Trained interviewers were employed to administer the questionnaires and measure the blood pressures and triceps skinfold thickness in a total of 131 persons. These persons proved to be of very varied ethnic origins and approximately half of them were immigrants. Coronary infarction appears with certainty to have occurred in 5% and 10% were found to be overweight with triceps skinfold thickness of 20 mm or more. A statistically significant association was found between age and blood pressure so that higher age involved a greater risk of coming into a group with high risk or borderline risk blood pressure but, even among the younger men, 36% were found to be in these two groups. In addition to the behavior of the persons interviewed, the dietary habits, smoking habits and physical activity at work and in leisure time were described together with employment of blood pressure lowering agents. Quite a uniform picture was revealed as regards ethnic origin, age and social class. Many of the men ate food prepared outside home. Eggs, fat cheese and sugar were ingested in considerable quantities by more than half of the persons interviewed. This is of considerable significance if dietary habits are to be discussed in a prophylactic program.
